Essay on The Importance of Human Evolution - 1794 Words

Introduction The main purpose of this essay is to critically discuss the importance of an understanding of human evolution and the history of psychology for the modern psychologist. The essay aims to critically discuss the study of human evolution which includes some of the species that evolved over the years before we now have our species, the history of psychology and the different prominent figures that are responsible for psychology being the field it is today. Finally, how an understanding of this can aid a modern psychologist. Around the same time period they came into existence, two other species were present, homo rudolfensis (Alexeev 1986) and homo ergaster (Archaeology Information n.d). The brain size of Homo habilis was about 590-687 cc, unlike the Australopithecus they should evidence of tool usage (Tobias 1987). The homo ergaster species has a brain size of approximately 860cc (Australian museum n.d). They also showed evidence of tool making and there was a possibility of vocalization (). It is evident through this how the species are becoming more and more progressive, from the first species discussed not showing evidence of tool making and their brain size getting larger as each species is evolving. The next set of species is the homo Neanderthalensis; they evolved from a species named homo Heidelbergensis, who were thought to be the first species that acquired protolanguage (de Beaune et al. 2009). Homo Neanderthals had a brain size was about 1100-1400 cc (Holloway, Sherwood and Hof et al 2009). They showed evidence of tool usage; they were able to cope with frequent and dramatic changes in climate/ scenery () This shows that they were more able to adapt to environmental changes than the previous species discussed.() The Neanderthals first showed evidence of burial of the dead with gifts and also care for the elderly; this is an indication of social and cognitive abilities as they were ableShow MoreRelatedHow Organisms Evolved From a Common Ancestors1101 Words   |  5 PagesOne of the most important principles of biology is the main idea of evolution. Model Essay An Inspector Calls Example For Students

Model Essay An Inspector Calls The curtain rises with the family standing looking dumfoundedly at Mr Birling. They are all beginning to get panicky.  Mr Birling: If a real inspector is coming then we need to be able to get our stories straight, we dont want to tell this inspector the amount that we told the last one.  Everyone looks at Eric and Sheila.  Mrs Birling: I really think that if any of us let on then we will all be in really deep trouble.  Gerald: Hold on! How do we know that it is the same girl that has died? The other inspector could really have been bluffing and made up the whole lot. It could be a girl that nobody here has ever heard of. Mr Birling: Hes right you know. But still, we had better get good alibis just in case it is the same girl.  Eric: But how did he know that this was going to happen? It cant just be a coincidence.  Eric walks over to the drinks and pours himself a small whisky. Nobody seems to notice except Sheila, who is horrified.  I mean, he must have known that this was going to happen. I cant just accept that it was a coincidence.  Mr Birling: Anyway, that doesnt matter now. I doubt that he will pass on the information that he got out of us to anybody else. I think that he just came here to scare us. Sheila: Who cares if he passes on the information to anybody else? It does matter what we did because I think that we have driven a perfectly innocent girl to suicide. Of course it matters. Cant you see that?  There is a long pause.  Well, I dont care what any of you say about this, Im going to tell him the truth.  Mr Birling: Oh no youre not! Youre going to  Eric: Dont you see that shes right father. We have to tell him what happened and what we have all done. If Sheila doesnt, then I will. I cant live with a thing like that on my conscience. Mr Birling: Shut up both of you! The only reason that I dont throw you both out into the streets is that I dont want any of this to become public. It would create a scandal. If there is a scandal then both Mr Croft and I will lose our reputations as honourable men. Nobody will buy from us any more and we will therefore go bankrupt. It will spoil all my chances of getting a knighthood.  Sheila: Who cares about your silly knighthood. Between us we have driven this girl to suicide.  Gerald: How do you know that? It could be a totally different girl. Mr Birling: I hadnt finished! Eric, I want my à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½50 back. When youve  angrily paid that back then I think that I will throw you out. Its about time you learnt a lesson. Dont forget that it was you who got us into this mess in the first place.  Eric: No it wasnt. We all did our bit to kill this girl. We have to tell the truth.  Mr Birling: If we do, then well become bankrupt and youll have to live on the streets anyway.  Gerald: Hes right. If any of this gets out then both your father and I will be ruined. You wouldnt want that would you Sheila? Sheila: I dont care about any of that any more.  Sheila, who is now in a rage, storms out of the room. Eric walks over to the drinks and is about to pour one when he stops and realises what he is doing. He looks at everybody in the room and walks out after Sheila. The others exchange worried glances.  Mr Birling: Well, were well rid of them. At least they cant tell the Inspector what weve done.  They hear a door slam.  Mrs Birling: That was the front door. I hope they havent run off. .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .postImageUrl , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:hover , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:visited , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:active { border:0!important; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:active , .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7550ea75adec4a1bdbff53db0343ea0d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Atticus EssayGerald: Theyll be alright. Kosovo Balkans War

Richard Holbrook best captures the events that took place in Kosovo during the Balkans war in the book ‘End a war’. This book highlights various controversial issues. In particular, the role -played by the U.S. and Nato in the peacekeeping mission are controversial and they come out in this book. Although the Kosovo war is over, many questions remain unanswered to this date.Advertising We will write a custom book review sample on Kosovo Balkans War specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The question of who were responsible for the atrocities committed to the people and the role of America and Nato are some of the big questions that remain unanswered. The war took place between 1998 and 1999 in Kosovo, which was a province of the former Yugoslavia republic, Kosovo Balkans war, was of interest to the whole world. This is because the world had not experienced a war to such caliber since the world war two. For anyone interested in following the events that took place during this war and which resulted in the split of Yugoslavia, no other material does it better than the book ‘To end a war’ by Richard Holbrook. In his book, Holbrook described Kosovo to be the most dangerous place to be during that war in Europe during that particular time. In the book, Holbrook refers particularly the Igman route to Sarajevo as the most dangerous road in Europe. The road was literally littered with wreckage of vehicles that had been shot by Serb gunmen (Holbrooke, 1999, p. 22-24). The war had also been rated as the worst war in the European history. Working in Kosovo at the height of this war was therefore something that was unthought-of. How Holbrook decided to take his job as the chief mediator in Kosovo is still a controversy. In his book, however he gives an insight to the controversy by quoting that he had a passion for his mission. For his mission to be successful then the United States, Nato and the UN had to play their role. The U.S. Nato and the UN Since the creation of the United States of America, no single conflict in the world has ever become its business. In any conflict, America wcould play the roles of the chief peacekeeper, mediator and judge. There is nothing wrong in assuming such responsibility in order to stop a war or to stop atrocity committed to the public. However, in most cases America has assumed unnecessary responsibility.Advertising Looking for book review on eastern europe? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More How America is able to manipulate other European powerful countries in accepting its ideologies is also of great interest. â€Å"Who is Nato?† and what role does America play in Nato? Although Nato was supposed to be a joint European military force, America has been able to manipulate and control Nato for its own interest. Although the west had the capacity to end this war, their intervention w as a total failure and this is particularly noted in chapter 2 where Holbrook attempts to list five factors that made that western intervention in Yugoslavia a total failure and this chapter is the most insightful in this book. The fact is that Richard Holbrook was passionate about his mission as the chief negotiator in the Kosovo war and an ambassador of the United States. Although his mission was controversial, Holbrook had faith that peace in Kosovo could only result from a blend of western leadership, use of force and diplomacy. In all this components of the peace-bringing complex, the United States had the greatest role to play and Holbrook noted this. With the United States playing the chief role in settling the conflict, the role of the united Nation comes under criticism. The UN is supposed to be neutral in its operation but the U. S. seemed to take sides. If the U.S. had taken sides in such conflicts that are of world’s concern, then what is the role of the UN and Na to? This and others questions are among some of the major questions that were of concern to the people worldwide. This is observed from how the people back in Washington were against the US deep intervention in the crisis. In fact, most of the people in America were against the military role played by America. The act of sending Holbrook to Bosnia as the chief negotiator and the representative of the US can be viewed as a gamble. During this war, Clinton was the president of the United States and his role in this war was further to define his political career and his role as the president of the most powerful Nation in the world. The question of whether the US should have sent its troops to Kosovo remains unanswered. Critics have argued that the US could have left the UN to carry its mandate as the world peacekeeper. In the book, it is a fact that intervention by the US was a failure. Particularly, the book notes that the united state’s intervention in the war was nearly disa strous.Advertising We will write a custom book review sample on Kosovo Balkans War specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In this war, America displayed its military might; there is nothing wrong in America being the most powerful country in the world but how this power is applied is of concern. In the Balkans war, America assumed unnecessary roles and is noted to have misused its powers. Holbrook noted that the Kosovo war was a perfect demonstration of the use and misuse of American power (Holbrooke, 1999, p. 26-29). American intervention in Balkans war is just a drop in the ocean and this is noted in the book. Holbrook argues that American interventions have gone beyond the boundaries of the Balkans (Holbrooke, 1999, p. 25). Although people have criticized Holbrook on his work in this book by claiming that the work was meant to win back the favor of the people his claims on the role played by the US is questionable. Richard Holbrook in Kosovo Holbrook’s has been described as a daring and courageous man following his mission in Kosovo. To be in Kosovo during this time of war is the most difficult part in his career as a diplomat. The book gives a picture of his mission as a heroic mission, which begins as a tragedy following the death of his four-team members that took place when they attempted to reach Sarajevo. How Holbrook is portrayed in the book is also amazing, the way he plays his role, as the chief mediator of the Balkans is also interesting. In particular, his roles as a white house official and the leader of the Balkans are two contradicting positions. Holbrook however is able to balance these two roles and his efforts particularly in the intervention are commendable. His career in foreign affairs could be the main reason for his success. His personality was another reason that made his intervention process possible. In the book, Holbrook refers to himself as a proud peacemaker and therefore pea ce making to him was a calling. ‘To end a war’ is one book that will bring reality so close to fiction. This is the only book where death will be used for the purpose of experimentation on human ignorance and behavior. The book is therefore a contradiction of ideologies. In this book, people will use the current state of other people such as wars for their self-interest without considering the pain and loss that they suffer. Reference Holbrooke, R. (1999). The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Essays

The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Essays The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Paper The Courtship and Marriage Customs of the Waray Paper THE COURTSHIP AND MARRIAGE CUSTOM OF THE WARAY J. Colima Bajado The Philippines as a whole abounds in quaint marriage customs and traditions. Written literatures from Fr. Pedro Chirino (1590s), Blair and Robertson, to Gregorio Zaide describe the pre-Spanish marriage customs of the Philippines. More writers like Fay Cooper Cole, John Finley, C. R. Moss and John Garvan have written on the courtship and marriage rituals of the various tribes in the country. On the marriage customs of the Warays, some vernacular writers like Iluminado Lucente and Juan Ricacho have written plays portraying the marriage customs and practices of the region. Younger generations in the Samar-Leyte region may not even know how their great grandfathers won the hands of their great grannies, in relation to the present  Ã¢â‚¬Å"wer na u, dito na me†Ã‚  trend. The Illiterate Way of Courtship This kind of courtship has been practiced until the early 1900s. According to the narrations of Msgr. Alberto Almarines (1960s), illiterate young men in the rural areas, particularly in the hinterland sitios, observe this way of courtship passed to them by their great grandparents. Since they cannot read and write, actions, signs, signals, and even mimicries are flashed as costumarily understood to mean love. The man takes out an  inarmidol (crisply starched) white handkerchief and waves it to the woman, who could only give concealed glances. Then the man will kiss the handkerchief and put it over his chest. This is done when the young man does not have the chance to talk to the girl. If the girl accepts the love offered, she smiles and nods. When she frowns, she declines the offered affection. And when her face is expressionless, she does not yet know the answer. When she accepts, the man will then ask her hand for marriage. When she shows indifference, he will either wait for the ight time or simply forget her. The Kulalisi Courtship This type of courtship commences as a game, and concludes for real. Kulalisi  (sometimes spelledculalisi), is a game played after the nightly prayer for nine days of  lamay  (wake). Unmarried men and women gather in the house of the deceased to say the prayers, after which, the kulasisi game follows to console the bereaved family. The kulalisi game is a battle of wits between men and women. One of the elders in the house will act as  Hadi  (king) that will pair a man and a woman suspected or teased as sweethearts. The challenge to a  luwa  (verse) is cast by one who wins the draw using a shell called  buskay. Then the â€Å"luwa† or battle of words (somewhat like Balagtasan), and rhymes, and debates starts. If the challenger is a man and the challenged woman fails to outwit him, the reward is a â€Å"make-believe† marriage solemnized by the Hadi. If the man is outwitted by the woman, he becomes the woman’s slave and will do whatever the woman desires to let him do, for that night. Most of the â€Å"married† pairs in  culalisi  games become real partners for life. This kind of courtship has been commonly practiced up to the early 1900s. Tthe courtship through Panharana (Serenading) Wooing a woman by  panharana  is commonly practiced in the whole region up to the late 1990s; some even still practice this in other parts of the region, like Maydolong, Eastern Samar, up today. Serenading is a time-honored way of expressing one’s love and adoration to the accompaniment of a guitar, violin or other string and wind instruments. Moonlight nights are the perfect time for serenade. A man sings  kundiman  (love song) that is rich in lyrical beauty, appreciation of nature and profound sentiment of affection. A suitor who knows how to play a guitar serenades his admired woman by himself, for this is a rapport in his singing of love songs. A group of men serenades when the suitor cannot accompany himself in singing his love songs. The song  Mituo Ako  (I Believe) is once a popular serenade song in the Cebuano speaking part of the region, while Iluminado Lucente’s  Gihilom Ko  (I Secretly Bear) in the Waray speaking parts. While  panharana  is still practiced today, the town of Dagami in the province of Leyte once regulated its practice in the 1960s due to some stealing events resulted from serenading. While some were singing, others were stealing chickens, and other things. Serenading was then allowed from ten to twelve in the evening only. The Balata Courtship This type of courtship is one of the queer ways of wooing. This traditional practice is resorted to by the rich families. This is very common especially in the â€Å"capital† of the different provinces of the region such as Tacloban, Carigara, Palo, Biliran, Ormoc, Catarman, Calbayog, Catbalogan, Maasin and Borongan. In  balata, the parents of the bride and the groom agree to have their children married in accordance with their arrangement. It is the custom of the upperclass families through their exclusive formed groups. They hold week-end parties among themselves by turns. In the midst of the merry making, especially when they are already a bit tipsy, the betrothal of their children takes place. Although often started as a joke, the  balata  eventually becomes a serious matter involving  amor propio  and  palabra de honor. Usually, it is the parents of the male child who makes the proposal to the parents of the girl to have their children married when they reach the marriageable age. They mutually plan and finance the wedding of their children, give equal dowries of property such as land, livestock, jewelry, and cash with which their children will start their married life. They also agree with the kind of wedding, the grandeur, and the bands to play music, and all other things to make the wedding memorable. The day of the wedding is usually scheduled on the day the boy reaches his sixteenth year. Not all  balata  betrothal are negotiated and agreed upon during drinking sprees. Most of â€Å"balatas† results from the desire of both parties to insure the economic and financial stability of their children. The parents keep the betrothal of their children to themselves until the time comes when it is necessary to reveal it to their children. The betrothed are warned that refusal to comply with their pledge will bring their families dishonor and disgrace and the wrath of heaven will fall on them. Choice by parents This kind of courtship deprives young lovers from their right to choose their partners. The parents select their children’s life partners. Wealth and character or â€Å"urbanidad† as the parents fondly stress are the factors their prospective sons and daughters-in-law should possess. The boy’s parents look around for the girls who meet their criteria. Their search for girls extends to other towns and places where their friends and acquaintances live. They mark their choices for observation and preliminary selection. The girls’ parents base their selection on the same grounds. Their children are simply informed of their plans and tell them to abide to it. Usually, three possible candidates are chosen, the other two are reserves or alternatives. When they arrive at a choice, the courting begins. Courting through the Parents Courting a woman through her parents is another way of wooing. In this type of courting, the young man picks the girl and enlists the help of her parents. This is often resorted to when the girl does not reciprocate the boy’s feeling, or when her parents are very jealous. The young man and his parents will befriend the girl’s parents. The young man do manual works in the house of the girl, serves the girl’s parents, and do everything to please them. He put his best foot forward to impress, and eventually, gain their admiration and sympathy. A Back to Back Overview Perchance, it is not really the type of courtship that matters, after all. It is the sound of love that makes two lovers dance in harmony to its tune. As Rachel Gordo Maravilla’s  siday  says: Bis’ anu pa iton nga kaporma, Bis’ pa it yinaknan nagkakairiba, Kay iton karuyag boot sidngon, Amo manta gihapon. Bisan hin-o ha bug-os nga kalibutan, Tanan masayaw, Kon tukran na an kasing-kasing Han sonata Han Gugma. J. Colima Bajado graduated from University of the Philippines Tacloban with the degree in Political Science. Julie Taymor Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Julie Taymor - Movie Review Example She also moved to Japan where she studied puppetry, Japanese plays and general theatre. Julie has stood up as an iconic figure in the film industry, she is among the first female film directors to have a successive conversion of pieces in theatre to film. She has won many awards due to her immense ability. She directed different classic operas in Japan and in the United States. Notable was the â€Å"Oedipus Rex† which earned her an Emmy award; the lion king which earned a Toni’s award and many others that have earned her a place in history books. She is an all round director working well in theatre, operas and films. Titus Titus originally was a play; that is, Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare. It was adapted and crafted into a movie by the famous and artistic producer; Julie taymor. The movie was released in the year 2000 by Julie. Titus Andronicus is one of the bloodiest and the most gruesome play ever written by Shakespeare. It is a story of betrayal and vengea nce (Berardenelli, 21). In this particular film, it is easy to understand the artistic ability in Julie as she takes to task one of the relatively most unloved plays by Shakespeare and creates it into a huge movie success. There is fusion of times all depicted in the props in use. The costume take us back into the ancient Roman Empire and brings us back to the modern day Italy with an ease that may not be usually simple to depict by most directors. The story which is based on Titus Andronicus who is an aged commander of the Roman Empire’s army return to Rome. He returns after a finished conquering expedition on the Goths. This introductory part has the most artistic directorial ability being manifest; first the idea of casting, Julie here chose to have Anthony Hopkins play the part. Anthony with his powerful voice and steady posture depicts the legendary command in a near perfect way. The role played by his brother Marcus (Colm Feore) was intelligently done as the physical si milarities of the two people is not of great dispute. Titus returns and his brother wants to install him as emperor but he refuses and supports the candidature of one Sartunius who is quickly confirmed and announces that he will get married to his benefactors’ daughter Laviniah. Sartunius’ own brother rejects the claims by Sartunius that he has already been engaged to Laviniah (Titus’ daughter). The emperor chooses another girl and the lucky one being Tamora the Queen of the Goths who had been captured. She schemes’ her way a round to get revenge against Titus who had been responsible for the death of her son. With the help of her lover she causes the death of Bassiunus, allows Laviniah to be raped and mutilated, and further causes the abduction of Titus’ two sons. This revives the violent spirit of Titus. The rage and vengeance creates the subject matter of the film. Julie portrays the reality of the situation without having to make the viewers go through the agony of seeing the violent scenes. She on the contrary indicates the aftermath of the violent scenes perfectly and leaves the rest to imagination without leaving out the nity gritty’s of the script (Holden, 23). Taymor sets pace for the other filmmakers, giving a platform to showcase any script without having to include aspects that may injure the viewer of acts that may not in essence do justice to the piece and their removal does not affect the

Suprematism, Constructivism and De Stijl Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Suprematism, Constructivism and De Stijl - Essay Example The abstract arts: Suprematism and Constructivism developed in Russia while De Stijl developed in Holland. They all developed at the beginning of the 21st century. From 1917, the Bolshek revolution led to the blooming of the modernist styles. Suprematism developed as a spiritual freedom art that did not present art as a representation of material actual objects but as an emotional, inner feeling of one’s imagination that evoked meditation. It utilized the use of color, brush strokes and visual rhythm to engage spirituality. Kasimir Malevich founded the non-objective art in 1913. Malevich believed that the supreme reality of art was to liberate from the representational world and evoke ‘pure feeling.’ Bothe Malevich and Lissitzky believed that art could be used as an agent of change, and this was specified to societal change in Constructivism. Constructivism on the other hand developed when Russians faced many social and political injustices and there was need for art not to represent existing objects, but to address the needs of the people. It revolutionized art from’ art for art’s sake’ to ‘art for the society.’ Art in this style has addressed the needs of the society, and has influenced the modern world on political, social and architectural realms. El Lissitzky, a Russian, contributed to this artistic revolution by developing constructivism. The art form, as Suprematism, used similar geometric language but abandoned the mystical vision that favored its ‘socialism of vision.’ It was a Utopian projection.

Marketing Strategies of Catering Firms Essay Example for Free

Marketing Strategies of Catering Firms Essay Basically, the Descriptive method of research will be utilized in the study since it is designed for the investigation or to gather information about present existing conditions. [1]This will be done by gathering the descriptive data through the use of researcher-made questionnaires. Manuel and Medel(1990) defined Descriptive Research as a research that describes ‘what is’. It involves the description, recording analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or how a person, group or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast.[2] According to Polit and Hungler(1999), Descriptive Research describes what exists and may help to uncover new facts and meaning. The purpose of Descriptive Research is to discover, describe and document. Aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs.[3] In other words, Dsescriptive Reserch design is a valid method for researching specific subjects and as a precursor to more quantitative studies. Whilst there are some valid concerns about the statistical validity, as long as the limitations are understood by the researcher, this type of study is an invaluable scientific tool.[4] Its common means of obtaining information include the use of the questionnaire, personal interviews with the aid of study or interview schedule, and observation, either participatory or not. Descriptive Research includes studies that gives meaning to the quality and standing of facts that are going on. For instance, the information about a group of person, a number of objects, a set of conditions, a class of events, a system of thought or any other kind of phenomenon or experience which one may wish to study.[5] This method will be appropriate and used in the study because it is concerned with the conditions that exist and help to answer the questions involving the Marketing Strategies of Catering Firms in selected towns in Rizal. SETTING OF THE STUDY This study will be conducted in selected towns in Rizal. Rizal is a province located in the CALABARZON, just 16 kilometers east of Manila. The province was named after the countrys national hero,Josà © Rizal. Rizal Governor Dr. Casimiro Ynares III on June 17, 2008 announced the transfer of the Capitol from Pasig. Its P 270-million capitol building, constructed in Antipolo by Ortigas Co., owner thereof, was completed by December of that year. Built on 5-hectare lot at the Ynares Center, it employs 2,008 employees. The New Capitol was successfully inaugurated on March 4, 2009, bringing back the Capitol Building inside the provincial territory, from which it was absent for 33 years (when Pasig was incorporated into Metro Manila). Rizal is bordered by Metro Manila to the west, the province of Bulacan to the north, Quezon to the east and Laguna province to the south. The province also lies on the northern shores of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country. Rizal is a mountainous province perched on the western slopes of the southern portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range. Antipolo boasts of a wonderful view of Metro Manila and it is where Hinulugang Taktak, a waterfall popular with tourists, can be found. The Rizal Province will be accessed by the future C-6 Road connecting the provinces of Bulacan and Cavite and cities of Taguig (beside Laguna de bay), Paraà ±aque and Muntinlupa which are located within Metro Manila. [6] The selected towns to be involved in the study are Tanay, Taytay, Angono, Binangonan, and Cainta. Tanay is a first class municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is located 57 kilometers (35 mi) east of Manila, although a typical commute between Manila and Tanay will take between one to three hours depending upon traffic conditions. It contains portions of the Sierra Madre Mountains and is bordered by Antipolo City in the northwest, Baras, Morong and Teresa in the west, General Nakar (Quezon Province) in the east, and Pililla, Santa Maria (Laguna province) as well as the lake Laguna de Bay in the south. According to the latest census, it has a population of 94,460 people in 15,720 households. The majority of the population consists of Tagalogs who live near Laguna de Bay, though there are also a significant percentage of mountain dwelling people living in the northern portions of the municipality. The towns major trades consist of fishing, agriculture and regional commerce. Tanay is also believed to be the birthplace of the Sambal language. [7] *Continuation of Setting of the Study* The City of Taytay is a first class, densely populated municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is currently the third most populous municipality in the country. Conurbated with Metro Manila, it is bounded by Cainta on the north, Pasig City and Taguig City on the west, Antipolo City in the East and Angono on the South. It is the Woodworks and Garments Capital of the Philippines.[8] Angono is a first class urban municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is known as Arts Capital of the Philippines, and located 30 kilometers (19 mi) east of Manila. According to the latest census of August 1, 2007, it has a population of 97,209 inhabitants (or 4.26% of Rizal provinces total population of 2,284,046) in 15,740 households. First created as a pueblo in 1766, Angono was a barrio of its neighboring town Taytay and Binangonan before being legally proclaimed an independent municipality in 1935 by then President Manuel L. Quezon. It is home to the Angono Petroglyphs, the oldest known work of art in the Philippines. [9] The Municipality of Binangonan is a first class urban municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 249,872 inhabitants in 38,488 households in census. It has a land area of 64.38 km ². A thriving fish port and fishing industry is found in Binangonan, having a long coast line facing the Laguna de Bay, including the western part of Talim Island. The plant of Rizal Cement and Grandspan are in Binangonan as well. Their main livelihood are fishing and farming. With the continuous expansion of Metro Manila, the municipality is now part of Manilas conurbation which reaches Cardona in its eastern-most part.[10] The Municipality of Cainta (Filipino: Bayan ng Cainta) is a first-class urban municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is one of the oldest (originally founded on August 15, 1571), and is the town with the second smallest land area of 26.81 square kilometers (10.35 sq. mi) next to Angono with 26.22 square kilometers (10.12 sq. mi).Cainta serves as the secondary gateway to the rest of Rizal province from Metro Manila. Cainta became one of the most urbanized towns due to its proximity to Manila.[11] Subject Of The Study The subject of the study will be twenty five(25) owners or caterers in selected towns in Rizal. The selected towns to be involved in the study are Tanay, Taytay, Angono, Binangonan and Cainta. The researchers will distribute the questionnaire – checklist to the five(5) catering firms in each selected towns. Sources of Data In this study, the researchers will use a questionnaire – checklist as the main tool in gathering the needed data or information on the marketing strategies of catering firms in selected towns in Rizal. The researchers adapted the questionnaire of Caisip et al, with some modifications to suit the type of respondents. The questionnaire – checklist is divided into three parts: Part 1 pertains to the personal profile of the respondents which includes the age, job position, sex, civil status, educational attainment, monthly salary, type of catering, ownership, accreditation, affiliation and location. Part 2 consists of the profile of catering firms that perceived by the respondents which includes the physical facilities, services offered, capacity, number of staff, income per year, price per pax, target market and amenities. Part 3 contains the different marketing strategies used by the caterers to attract customers. These will be answered by the respondents by putting a checkmark on the corresponding space by using the following five-point scales: SCALE| VERBAL INTERPRETATIONS| 5| Very Much(VM)| Always(A)| 4| Much(M)| Frequently(F)| 3| Moderate(MO)| Occasionally(O)| 2| Little(L)| Rarely(R)| 1| Very Little(VL)| Never(N)| This scale will be used to know the effectiveness of the marketing strategies that the catering firms applied. Procedure Of The Study The researchers underwent planning which includes the formulation of the problem, they decided to go on the title â€Å"Marketing Strategies of Catering Firms in Selected Towns in Rizal†. After the research instructors’ approval of the title, the researchers gathered related literature and studies to complete the Chapter 1 and 2. In Chapter 1, the researchers collected the needed information involving the Introduction, Background of the Study, Theoretical Framework, Conceptual Framework, Statements of the Problem, Hypothesis, Scope and Limitation of the Study, and Definition of Terms. The Statements of the Problem will be pattern to the Study of Caisip, Catherine C. et al. While in the Chapter 2, the researchers did the same thing in gathering the data needed, which includes the Research Method, Sources of Data, Setting of the Study, Subject of the Study, Procedure of the Study, and Statistical Treatment. Upon the completion of the 2 chapters, the research instructors will schedule the researches for the colloquium. So, the constructive criticisms will be made by the panelists for the improvement of the study. Statistical Treatment To analyze the data gathered, the indicated statistical treatment below will be used in the study: Problem number 1: Frequency and Percentage Distribution will be used to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, job, sex, civil status, educational attainment, monthly salary, type of catering, ownership, accreditation and affiliation, and location. Problem number 2: Weighted mean will be used to determine the marketing strategies of catering firms in selected towns in Rizal in terms of physical facilities. Frequency and Percentage Distribution will be used to determine the marketing strategies of catering firms in selected towns in Rizal in terms of services offered, capacity, number of staff, income per year, price per pax, target market and amenities. Problem number 3: F-Test(One Way ANOVA) will be utilized to determine if there is any significant difference on the marketing strategies of catering firms in selected towns in Rizal with respect to the different aspects in terms of physical facilities, service offered, capacity, number of staff, income per year, price per pax, target market and amenities. School Violence Essay -- School Violence Essays

Violence in our schools is an issue that has become more prominent in the last few years. News articles about violent deeds within the school setting are on the increase. Our society demands that schools are safe for our children. In order to maintain a peaceful environment for all, we must address and inform our schools, children, and parents as well as the neighboring communities about the issue of school violence. As David W. Johnson, the author of Reducing School Violence states, â€Å"To eliminate violence and resolve destructive conflicts, schools must first admit that such conflicts are out of control.† (Johnson 7) Schools in general must identify with these issues in order to deal with them. If violence in schools is to be controlled, the entire school community must take a proactive stance against violence. Since the setting is the school, it should follow that the schools are responsible and liable for maintaining violent free environments. This proactive stance can be accomplished by holding seminars informing students, parents, and neighboring communities of what is taking place in the school on a regular basis. Educators and administrators should inform the student body and the community of any precautions and safety measure to take if a violent event should occur. Any type of violence in the school setting should be fully addressed in order to prevent further altercations from occurring. Student seminars that inform students of violent behavior and clearly state consequences are becoming a very popular trend across the U.S. Francis Hoang, of the FBI Law Enforcement Agency believes that each school should make sure that they are aware of what is going on and to include this vital information in a presentation to t... ...ion. Comparison Essay between the Narrative of Mary Rowlandson

A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson (Rowlandson, 1682/1996) The setting was New England. The English had established settlements in the Eastern board of the present-day United States to expand England’s trade routes in the Americas. The expansion was accompanied by mass conversion of Indians, whom the Europeans regarded as savage or uncivilized heathens. The missionary work though of Puritan pastors in New England was generally unsuccessful. The Indians associated the spread of new diseases   and dissension with Christianity. The Puritan pastors were not prevented from preaching Christianity to the Indians because of military support from the colonial government. In 1675, Wampanoag Chief Metacomet became overcritical of the English over the issues of encroching tribal lands and of course, the preaching of Christianity. He launched a series of raids in New England and captured many prisoners. One of them was Mary White Rowlandson, a wife of a Congregationist minister, and mother of three children. Mary Rowlandson became a prisoner of the Indians for several months. She and her children, while at captivity, were forced to work as members of the tribe. They were ransomed and freed before the end of the war. During her captivity, she wrote a narrative depicted her life as a prisoner of war and member of a tribe. Rowlandson’s narrative depicted first amd foremost the beliefs of the Puritan missionaries. Most of the Puritans in New England lived areligious and humble life. Because of their desire to convert the Indians, they were drawn to the wilderness and the â€Å"wild natives† who inhabit it. This mixture of piety and adventure affected Puritan literature. The Puritans were portrayed as the pious servants of God, the Indians the prospect hostile Gentiles. In many passages of Rowlandson’s narrative, the Indians were depicted as cannibalistic and enchanted. Thus, the narrative of Rowlandson served as a moral guidance to the English Puriatn reader, a form of unwavering salute to God. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Douglas, _/1999) The life of an American slave during the colonial and pre-Civil War America was miserable and degrading. The distance between the white man and the African was so intense that even african language was discriminated. In addition, the increasing complexity of American economic life demanded cheap labor. Here, the Negroes served the purpose. There was no magnanimity on the part of the English and later American settlers to the Negroes. They were seldom treated as human beings. In this narrative, Frederick Douglas showed the sufferings of the Negroes on rational and economic terms. Douglas treated discrimination as a form of social ill experienced by the Negroes. He argued that the properties of the whites were built on slave labor, a form of economic backlashing. In his commentary on slave songs, he maintained distance between himself and slavery. In reality, he did not understand the meaning of the songs although he was a slave. Thus, he interpreted all slave songs as laments. Here, Douglas made an error when he said that all slave songs were born out of hatred and ill comfort. In essence, many of the slave songs were songs of joy, work, and adventure. The physical and social depravity of the Negroes forced them to enjoy work as it may deem fit. The adventures of their ancestors in Africa were told with gestures of joy and respect; a form of cultural appraisal. Thus, when Douglas assumed himself as the mediator between the white and the Negroes, he himself embraced both cultures as if no essential defects were visible. Here, unlike Rowlandson, Douglas played as an objective narrator. References Douglas, Frederick. 1999. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave. Oxford; Oxford University Press. Comparison of The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Flight

Comparison of The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Flight Empathy is one of the things that distinguish a human being from other species. This concept can be understood as the ability of an individual to recognize and understand the feelings and emotions of another person.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Comparison of Empathy in the Novels The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Flight specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In some cases, the word empathy implies that a person can accept the humanity of others despite social, economic, or political differences. This paper is aimed at discussing two novels, namely The Reluctant Fundamentalist written by Mohsin Hamid and Flight by Sherman Alexie. These novels have recently attracted much attention of critics and scholars. One of the main themes that the authors explore is that the ability to empathize can often be impeded by the borders of race, nationality or culture. Moreover, it can be limited by the memories of violence, humiliation, and loss. Nevertheless, both Mohsin Hamid and Sherman Alexie create protagonists who can transcend these borders. These authors focus on the idea that empathy is essential for the fulfilling life of an individual. The writers also undermine popular stereotypes about the behavior of an individual. For instance, Mohsin Hamid shows that the need to achieve success does not deprive people of their ability to feel loyalty to ones country or fellow countrymen. In turn, Sherman Alexie demonstrates that different worldviews and ideologies do not necessarily separate people and make them hostile to one another. These are the main questions that should be examined in more detail. Special attention should be paid to the narrative techniques that the writers employ. They rely on the first-person narration which is particular suitable in those cases, when the author wants to focus on the feelings, attitudes, and emotions of the protagonist, rather than people with whom he/she interacts. For inst ance, Sherman Alexie starts his novel with the following introduction. ‘Call me Zits. Everybody calls me Zits. That’s not my real name, of course. My real name isn’t important’ (Alexie 1). To a great extent, this is an allusion to the famous novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Similarly, at the beginning of Mohsin Hamid’s novel, Changez introduces himself to the reader and identifies oneself as a Pakistani. Overall, this form of narrative voice is important because it implies that the major characters may be very subjective when evaluating the behavior of other people and their own actions. Overall, such form of story-telling is often regarded as unreliable narration. It is possible to say that subjectivity is one of the things that prevent a person from being empathetic because he/she is unable to place oneself in the position of others or look at the problem from a different perspective.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literatu re? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This statement is particularly applicable to Zits and his unjustified hatred toward others. Moreover, they tend to focus on their own experiences and may disregard the feelings of others. So, extreme subjectivity is one the main challenges that both Changez and Zits have to overcome. There is another thing that Zits and Changez have in common. They are aware that they are different from the majority of the population since they are perceived as non-white people. They also understand that they may not be fully accepted by others. This is one of the things that the protagonists are keenly aware of. For instance, Changez knows that as a Pakistani he had to face more challenges when he was applying to Princeton (Hamid 4). In turn, Zits also understands that he has a complex identity. In particular, the protagonist says, â€Å"I’m not really Irish or Indian. I’m a blank sky, a hu man solar eclipse† (Alexie 5). He cannot identify with any particular group in part because he has never felt the care of his mother or father (Hamid 3). This lack of care is the underlying cause of his animosity toward others. On the whole, the problem of identity is important for each of these characters. Changez wants to become a full member of the new society, but at the same time, he is attached to his Pakistani heritage. In turn, Zits is convinced that the community in which he leaves is hostile to him, in part because his father was a Native American. Thus, the concept of identity plays an important role in each of these novels. In both cases, the characters understand that they are different from others. This is one of the main things that should be taken into account by the readers of these novels. One can identify other barriers that can make empathy very difficult for the protagonists. For instance, Changez has to be competitive in the workplace, and this competitio n prompts an individual to focus on his/her strengths, but it is difficult for him/her to be sentimental or compassionate. On the whole, the author shows that Changez’ need to achieve success as a professional and his willingness to integrate himself into the society can often impede his ability to empathize with other human beings. Changez has a chance to climb a career ladder in the firm but he eventually rejects this opportunity and returns to his homeland. So, one should remember about this decision when discussing this character. This is the critical moment in the development of his character and his attitudes toward others.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Comparison of Empathy in the Novels The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Flight specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In his turn, Zits is afflicted by the memories of abuse both at home and in school. He cannot expect anything good from other people, especiall y from adults. Moreover, this boy is keenly aware of the social inequality that has become typical of the modern American society. For instance, Zits says, â€Å"I hate my country. There are so many rich people who do not share† (Alexie 26). It should be noted that this boy frequently uses the word hate, and it is directed against various social, ethnic, or religious groups. The protagonist does not explain why he feels in such a way. He cannot even accept the possibility that other people can face the same misfortunes. Certainly, one has to admit that this boy has endured a lot of suffering, but he cannot accept that other people do not deserve his hatred. So, at the beginning of the novel, empathy is not typical of him and he even tries to reject it. This is how the character behaves at the very beginning. Nevertheless, Mohsin Hamid and Sherman Alexie show that an individual can overcome these obstacles that prevent a person from being empathetic. To some extent, they are a ble to recognize the humanity of other people and see that they can encounter the same problems. However, their empathy takes different forms. When speaking about Changez, one should first speak about the September 11 attacks and increasing suspicion of Pakistani people. This is why Changez begins to empathize with his compatriots, especially when he notices that they can be treated unjustly. This is why he quits his job at a prestigious consulting firm and prefers to move back to Pakistan. On the whole, the behavior of this character undermines the so-called common sense story according to which an individual strives primarily for success. Certainly, it is important for the wellbeing of a person, but he/she also wants to have a sense of belonging to a certain community. Without it the life of a person can hardly be fulfilling. This is one of the reasons why Changez chooses to highlight his Pakistani descent, for example, by growing his beard (Hamid 130). Later, he decides to become a teacher in a Pakistani university, but he could have made a career in a prestigious American firm. This is how he deviates from the traditional common-sense story. Still, one should bear in mind that his empathy is primarily directed to his compatriots; Mohsin Hamid does not show that Changez can be equally compassionate toward people representing other nationalities or religions. So, his empathy still has national boundaries and to a great extent it is very limited. The main protagonist of Flight also undergoes a dramatic change. Sherman Alexie is able to create a series of flashbacks during which Zits places himself in the position of other people. For example, he sees himself as a mute Indian boy, an Indian hunter, and most importantly the father of the protagonists. On the whole, these flashbacks demonstrate to him that his hatred leads only to self-destruction. He can see that other people can encounter the same problems or similar forms of injustice.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Thus, he can see the futility of violence and its adverse impacts on an individual. He understands that his deviant behavior, such as shooting can actually harm other people who have nothing to do with problems. So, in this way, Sherman Alexie was able to show how empathy could overcome such barriers as the memory of loss and the feeling of alienation. Only when he comes to this conclusion, he finds the family where he can feel at rest. On the whole, Sherman Alexie has been able to show the transformation of the main character and this is one of his major achievements as a writer. These novels tell the stories of people are different in terms of age, education, nationality, and cultural background. However, they struggle to find their way to empathy. The protagonist of Sherman Alexie’s novel is affected by alienation from others, abuse, and the feeling of loss. This is one of the reasons why he is obsessed with hatred, and the very idea of empathy is unacceptable to him. In h is turn, Changez is affected by the need to achieve success and integrate himself into the society. However, due to various external factors, the main characters realize that the ability to empathize is critical for the happiness of a human being. It gives a person a sense of belonging. This is one of the messages that Sherman Alexie and Mohsin Hamid try to convey. The main message that the writers try to convey is that political, cultural or national differences do not deprive a person of his/her right to empathy. Alexie, Sherman. Using German Participles as Adjectives and Adverbs

Using German Participles as Adjectives and Adverbs As in English, the past participle of a German verb may be used as an adjective or adverb. In English,  stolen  is the past participle of the verb  to steal. The word  stolen  can be used as an adjective, as in: â€Å"Thats a  stolen  car.† Similarly, in German the past participle  gestohlen  (fromstehlen, to steal) can also be used as an adjective: â€Å"Das ist ein  gestohlenes  Auto.† The only significant difference between the ways that English and German use the past participle as an adjective is the fact that, unlike English adjectives, German adjectives must have an appropriate ending if they precede a noun. (Notice the -es  ending in the example above. More about adjective endings in  Lesson 5  and  Adjective Endings.) Of course, it also helps if you know the correct past participle forms to use. A past participle such as  interessiert  (interested) can also be used as an adverb: â€Å"Wir saheninteressiert  zu.† (â€Å"We watched  interestedly/with interest.†) Present Participles Unlike its English equivalent, the present participle in German is used almost exclusively as an adjective or adverb. For other uses, German present participles are usually replaced by nominalized verbs (verbs used as nouns) -   das Lesen  (reading),  das Schwimmen  (swimming) - to function like English gerunds, for instance. In English, the present participle has an -ingending. In German the present participle ends in -end:  weinend  (crying),  pfeifend  (whistling),schlafend  (sleeping). In German, â€Å"a  sleeping  child† is â€Å"ein  schlafendes  Kind.† As with any adjective in German, the ending must fit the grammatical context, in this case an -es  ending (neuter/das). Many present participle adjective phrases in German are translated with a relative clause or an appositive phrase in English. For example, â€Å"Der  schnell vorbeifahrende  Zug machte großen Lrm,† would be, â€Å"The train, which was  quickly passing by, made a tremendous noise,† rather than the literal, â€Å"The quickly passing by train...† When used as adverbs, German present participles are treated like any other adverb, and the English translation usually places the adverb or adverbial phrase at the end: â€Å"Er kam  pfeifend  ins Zimmer.† â€Å"He came into the room  whistling.† Present participles are used more often in writing than in spoken German. Youll run across them a lot when reading books, magazines, or newspapers.

Dissolved Oxygen Content and Fish Populations in Water Coursework

Dissolved Oxygen Content and Fish Populations in Water - Coursework Example 6. Analyze results – Assume that your experiment produces results identical to those seen in Table 4, what type of graph would be appropriate for displaying the data and why? 6. Analyze results – Assume that your experiment produces results identical to those seen in Table 4, what type of graph would be appropriate for displaying the data and why? The best type of graph to be used will be a line graph. This type of graph best illustrates trends or behavior of the dependent variable (fish) against varying oxygen levels. The line graph helps the researcher easily monitor increases and declines in the variable over time.   7. Analyze results - Graph the data from Table 4 and describe what your graph looks like (you do not have to submit a picture of the actual graph!). For oxygen levels of between 0 and 4 ppm, the graph rises steadily but for values between 4 and 12 ppm, there is a sharp rise. However, there is a significant drop between levels of 12 and 14ppm, before again showing a steady rise between levels of 14 and 18ppm.   8. Draw conclusions - Interpret the data from the graph made in Question 7.   What conclusions can you make based on the results of this graph? Based on the results, fish thrive well in water with dissolved oxygen concentrations of about 12ppm. However, when the oxygen level is raised above this level, there is no significant increase in the number of fish but instead; a drop in fish populations may be witnessed. Therefore, 12ppm is the optimal level of dissolved oxygen for fish survival.  9. Draw conclusions – Assuming that your experiment produced results identical to those seen in Table 4, would you reject or accept the hypothesis that you produced in question 3?   Explain how you determined this. If my experimental results were to be identical to the above, I would accept my hypothesis. This is because the highest population of fish is witnessed at 12ppm dissolved oxygen level. This means that any values below the 12ppm will lead and this supports my hypothesis.

Biography Of Alfred Binet The Psychologist Research Paper

Biography Of Alfred Binet The Psychologist - Research Paper Example Thus, he began studying the natural sciences with a particular emphasis in neurology. In 1891, Binet took over as the director of the Laboratory of Physiological Psychology in Sorbonne. Specifically, Binet was interested in the development of children, specifically in the field of the developing intelligence (â€Å"Binet, Alfred). Intelligence, to this day, is still a highly debated field. The debate focuses on two main issues: defining what intelligence is and deciding whether it is an inherently biological feature or whether the environment defines it. Society has attempted to figure out ways to quantify the measure of one’s intelligence and this started with Binet. At first, Binet was interested in developing tests in which they would be used to see whether a child was suffering from a mental disability or not. This started when he was asked to join the Free Society for the Psychological Study of Children. His goal was to take this study and use a highly scientific and qua ntitative method in order to quantify this construct of intelligence. This use of quantifiable measurements lead to Binet creating the first types of intelligence tests, making him the father of all the modern intelligence tests that are used today to measure constructs from IQ to scholastic achievement. At the forefront of his intelligence tests, a student under the name of Theodore Simon appointed himself as Binet’s assistant in the study of childhood intelligence. They developed a scale of intelligence, which became famously known as the Binet-Simon scale. The Binet-Simon scale was the first created by Binet and Simon that was a psychological test in order to gauge a child’s intelligence level. The scale consisted of a number of tests, which would require the child to demonstrate different ways of thinking and problem solving. Some of these tests were aimed at measuring the child’s perception in response to a stimulus such as light, auditory, and tactile resp onses. Other tests worked on a recognition principle using the recognition of food as the construct. This would involve presenting the food with an object that wasn’t food, but was similar in the dimensions, appearance, etc. to see whether or not the child would be able to tell a difference. In addition, there were tests that were designed to gauge how effectively the child’s motor function and coordination worked through the execution of simple movements through commands. Lastly, they would test what today could be considered general intelligence in that it involved the recognition and statement of what objects were. This was accomplished through the use of physical objects, pictures, etc. which required not only for the child to recognize and process what it was, but be able to tell the tester verbally what they were seeing. Comparison tests were also used in order to determine whether the child could discriminate against objects, which were similar, but different. T ests in attention, suggestibility, memory, and problem solving were also conducted in order to determine the child’s intellectual level (Binet). Binet was very thorough in his methods as he wanted to use a scientific method as well as be able to quantify his data. However, he was a self-learned psychologists which in the end gave him a grave disadvantage when we was developing theories regarding intelligence. Thus, many of his scales were
